Who We Are

The La Crosse Chimney Swift Community Science Project is part of the Wisconsin Chimney Swift Working Group. Our local group conducts an ongoing monitoring program, counting Chimney Swifts entering night roosts around town. Our goals are to (1) better understand changing roost preferences during spring, summer, and fall, (2) identify important habitat roost structures, (3) engage the community and enhance awareness of these remarkable birds, and (4) enjoy the experience of swift evening roosting.

How Volunteers Help

Volunteers commit to about one hour per monitoring assignment at selected sites around La Crosse, and report results to the coordinator. Assignments and results are shared via email. Training opportunities and protocols are available. Previous knowledge of swifts or bird watching experience is not needed, but close attention to the roost and accurate note taking is necessary. Join a group of dedicated swift watchers and learn about the fascinating biology of this aerial bird which experiences declining numbers.
