Volunteer: Help a child learn to love reading - Read to Success/Tomah

Reading is the foundation of all learning.  You can help third-graders in Tomah's Miller Elementary School master this key life skill, as a Read to Success tutor with The Great Rivers United Way!

Studies show if a child is not up to grade level reading by the end of third grade, they almost never catch up.

Read to Success runs throughout the majority of a school year, generally October - Mid May. Over the course of the 2025 - 2026 school year, you will work with one or two students, spending 30-45 minutes with them each week during the school day.

Volunteers read to their student using a book we've selected that relates to a specific subject and have them read to you as well as participate in fun reading-based activities! To help you and your student feel comfortable and connected,  Great Rivers United Way provides a tutoring bin with literacy related conversation starter materials to help you focus your time together on reading skills.  Materials include question cards such as "what do you think will happen next?"  "Why do you think the character made that choice?"

In addition to helping your student improve their reading skills, your positive influence can have benefits that will last a lifetime.  The kids need the extra help and their teachers appreciate the extra support you can provide!

Schools require all volunteers have an approved background check on file to work with students.  The Great Rivers United Way Community Engagement Coordinator, Connor will contact you to explain more about the program and initiate the required background check.

So sign up today and help a child learn to love reading in your community!

Volunteer: Share your expertise as part of the Badgerland Community Connections and Partner Program

Are you passionate about civic engagement and advocacy? Or maybe you're a scientist or engineer who revels in STEM? Do you love sharing tips and tricks about sales and marketing? Or how to build a campfire and practice eco-camping?

Become a mentor with Badgerland and share your story, expertise and knowledge with Girl Scouts!

We're building the Badgerland Community Connections and Partners Program, a pool of experts from the community to help Girl Scouts earn badge/patch work, master new skills and learn from the best.

We are looking for enthusiastic community members, businesses and organizations to enrich experiences at troop meetings, council programs and more.

As a Badgerland mentor, you will inspire Girl Scouts to explore more, discover interests and spark passions. Be a part of the experience that launches them into leaders that make the world a better place.

Time commitment varies and is flexible to fit your schedule. You’ll chat with the Partnerships & Volunteer Manager, who’ll help you determine the best opportunities that fit you and Badgerland. We'll assist you in becoming a confidence Girl Scout mentor with prep, training and connections along the way.

Be a subject matter expert and make a difference! Join the Badgerland Community Connections and Partner Programs.

We are looking for caring, responsible individuals to become defenders of youth potential by volunteering to be mentors with our organization!
