The Good Fight Community Center | La Crosse, WI
College Internship | $1,000 Semester Stipend + University Credit

Help Fund the Work That Changes Kids' Lives

Behind every successful youth program is a team of people who make sure the resources are there to make it happen.

The Good Fight Community Center is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Grant Writing & Development Intern to help us identify funding opportunities, develop compelling grant proposals, build relationships with funders, and support our broader fundraising efforts.

This is a great opportunity for a college student who enjoys writing, research, organization, and relationship-building and wants hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising and development.

You'll work directly with the Executive Director and gain practical experience with the full grant-development process—from researching prospective funders to writing proposals, submitting applications, tracking opportunities, and cultivating relationships with donors and grantors.

What You'll Do

Grant Research & Proposal Development

Research foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other potential grantors

Identify funding opportunities that align with The Good Fight's programs, mission, and funding priorities

Research prospective funders and learn about their priorities, giving history, application requirements, and deadlines

Assist the Executive Director with developing compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and other funding requests

Draft, edit, and proofread grant narratives and supporting materials

Gather information and documentation needed for grant applications

Ensure proposals are accurate, complete, compelling, and submitted on time

Maintain organized records of grant opportunities, applications, deadlines, and outcomes

Funder & Donor Relations

Initiate and maintain professional communication with potential and current grantors

Assist with follow-up communication and grantor stewardship

Research potential major donor prospects

Assist with donor outreach and cultivation

Help identify opportunities to deepen relationships with donors, businesses, foundations, and community partners

Development Support

Assist with maintaining and updating The Good Fight's donor database

Help track fundraising activity and prospect information

Support fundraising campaigns and special events

Assist with other development and fundraising projects as assigned

Work closely with the Executive Director to identify new opportunities to strengthen The Good Fight's fundraising capacity

What We're Looking For

Required:

Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program

At least 18 years of age

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Excellent research and organizational skills

Strong attention to detail

Proficient with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace

Able to manage deadlines and complete projects accurately and on time

Self-directed and comfortable working independently

Professional and comfortable communicating with external partners

Interest in nonprofit fundraising, philanthropy, community development, or a related field

Helpful, but not required:

Previous grant writing or fundraising experience

Experience working with youth

Experience with nonprofit organizations

Experience with program development or facilitation

Experience with donor databases or CRM systems

Coursework in communications, English, nonprofit management, business, marketing, public relations, or a related field

What You'll Learn

This internship is designed to provide real-world, portfolio-worthy experience in nonprofit development. Depending on your interests and experience, you'll have opportunities to learn about:

Foundation and corporate philanthropy

Grant prospect research

Grant proposal writing

Letters of inquiry

Fundraising strategy

Donor research and prospecting

Donor cultivation and stewardship

Nonprofit communications

Fundraising databases and CRM systems

Relationship-building with community partners

How nonprofit organizations build and sustain their financial resources

You'll work directly with organizational leadership and see how fundraising connects to the programs and services provided to young people in our community.

Schedule & Commitment

Minimum commitment: 10 hours per week

Some flexibility is available to accommodate class schedules and other academic responsibilities. Interns will work closely with the Executive Director to establish a consistent schedule and priorities.

Compensation & Academic Credit

Interns may receive university/college credit, subject to the requirements of their academic program.

The Good Fight also provides a $1,000 stipend per semester for interns who maintain the required minimum commitment of 10 hours per week.

Stipend payment dates (happen on pay date closest to below date):

May 1st (spring semester)

August 1st (summer)

December 1st (fall semester)

Supervision & Support

The Executive Director of The Good Fight Community Center serves as the internship site supervisor.

You will receive direct guidance, feedback, and support throughout the internship while also having meaningful opportunities to take ownership of projects and work independently.

Why Intern at The Good Fight?

This isn't a hypothetical classroom exercise. Your work will directly contribute to the resources that allow The Good Fight to serve local young people.

You'll help identify the funding opportunities that can provide meals, transportation, academic support, enrichment activities, field trips, mentoring, and other opportunities for kids ages 8–18.

If you're a strong writer, curious researcher, organized problem-solver, and interested in learning how fundraising can turn a good mission into sustainable impact, we'd love to hear from you.

How to Apply

Please send your resume to:

Volunteer: Volunteer with Youth!

Youth Mentor Volunteer

The Good Fight Community Center | La Crosse, WI
Volunteer Position | Youth Ages 8–18 | Flexible Commitment

Make a Difference. Build Relationships. Be Someone a Kid Can Count On.

At The Good Fight Community Center, we believe that one caring, consistent adult can make a tremendous difference in a young person's life.

We're looking for positive, dependable volunteers who want to spend time with young people, build genuine relationships, have fun, and help create a safe and supportive environment where kids can learn, grow, and be themselves.

As a Youth Mentor Volunteer, you'll become part of a team serving approximately 20–30 young people ages 8–18 during our programming. You don't need to be a teacher, coach, or youth-development expert. You simply need to be someone who enjoys working with young people, is willing to get involved, and wants to make a difference.

What You'll Do

Our volunteers are active participants in the Good Fight community—not just observers.

You'll:

Supervise and interact with youth ages 8–18

Proactively engage young people in conversation, games, activities, and other programming

Build positive, respectful relationships with youth

Participate in activities alongside the kids rather than simply watching from the sidelines

Encourage youth to participate, try new things, and interact with others

Help redirect behavior and reinforce appropriate boundaries when needed

Be a positive role model and a consistent, supportive adult presence

Help create a welcoming environment where every young person feels valued

Assist staff with activities, transitions, meals, and general programming

Share your interests, skills, hobbies, and personality with the kids

Participate in occasional special events and activities as your schedule allows

The Right Mindset Matters

Working with young people can be incredibly rewarding—and occasionally unpredictable!

We're looking for volunteers who are patient, flexible, resilient, and able to meet kids where they are. Not every young person will immediately want to talk with you, join an activity, or accept your invitation to participate. That's okay!

The best mentors understand that relationships take time. You should be comfortable giving young people space when they need it, trying again later, adapting your approach, and not taking a child's initial hesitation or occasional attitude personally.

Most importantly, we're looking for people who can remain positive, calm, encouraging, and consistent, even when things don't go exactly as planned.

What We're Looking For

You don't need specialized experience to volunteer with us, but you should be:

Dependable and responsible

Comfortable interacting with youth ages 8–18

Patient, positive, and encouraging

Comfortable initiating conversations and activities with young people

Willing to proactively engage rather than waiting for kids to approach you

Comfortable setting and reinforcing appropriate boundaries

Able to accept that building trust and relationships takes time

Flexible and adaptable in a busy youth-programming environment

Respectful of young people's different personalities, backgrounds, interests, and needs

Willing to work as part of a team and follow staff direction

Interested in being a consistent and positive presence in the lives of young people

Training & Support

You won't be thrown into the deep end.

The Good Fight provides orientation, training, and ongoing supervision and support to our volunteers. Staff will be available to answer questions, provide guidance, and help you feel comfortable and confident in your role.

Schedule

The greatest current need for volunteers is Wednesday through Friday.

We can discuss available shifts and find a schedule that works with your availability and our programming needs. Consistency is especially valuable because young people benefit most from seeing familiar, dependable adults regularly.

Meals Provided

Meals are provided for volunteers during their on-site volunteer hours.

Background Check Requirement

Because you'll be working directly with children and teenagers, all Good Fight volunteers are required to complete a standard Wisconsin DOJ Caregiver Background Check before beginning their volunteer service.

Why Volunteer at The Good Fight?

You don't have to change the world to make a difference in a kid's life.

Sometimes it's playing a game.
Sometimes it's listening to a story.
Sometimes it's joining a kid at the table for lunch.
Sometimes it's encouraging them to try something new.
And sometimes it's simply showing up—again and again—so they know someone cares.

Your time, attention, and consistency can become something a young person remembers for years.

If you enjoy working with kids, want to be part of a positive community, and are ready to roll up your sleeves and get involved, we'd love to have you join The Good Fight.

Come spend some time with us. Have some fun. Build some relationships. And help a kid know that their community believes in them.

Volunteer: Library of Congress By The People Transcription Project - Viterbo Orientation Service Day 2026

Help preserve history!

This group will be collaborating on a virtual project with staff from the Todd Wehr Memorial Library here on campus. The Library of Congress has digitized thousands of historical documents and has asked the public to help transcribe these images to better preserve their impact on our country’s history by making them searchable and more accessible.

For a more thorough description of the project and to prepare for working on it, please review the By the People Transcription Project guide at https://libguides.viterbo.edu/ByThePeople. We encourage anyone who signs up for this project to review the content on the guide, particularly the resources for transcribing and reading old handwriting, ahead of time to help us make a larger impact during our time together. This work makes historic information more discoverable, legible and accessible for future generations.

Examples of collections we’ll be able to transcribe at https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns-topics/ include: The Correspondence of James A. Garfield, Clara Barton: “Angel of the Battlefield,” Silent Film Music Cue Sheets, Walt Whitman, Rough Rider to Bull Moose: Letters to Theodore Roosevelt, Herencia: Centuries of Spanish Legal Documents, and Sheet Music of the Musical Theater.

Volunteer: Help a child learn to love reading - Read to Success/Black River Falls

Reading is the foundation of all learning.  You can help third-graders in Black River Falls' Red Creek Elementary School master this key skill, as a Read to Success tutor with The Great Rivers United Way!

Studies show if a child is not up to grade level reading by the end of third grade, they almost never catch up.

Read to Success runs throughout the majority of a school year, generally October - May. Over the course of the 2026-2027 school year, you will work with two or three students, spending 30-45 minutes with them each week during the school day.

You'll read to your student using a book we've selected that relates to a specific subject and have them read to you as well as participate in fun reading-based activities! To help you and your student feel comfortable and connected,  Great Rivers United Way provides a tutoring bin with literacy related conversation starter materials to help you focus your time together on reading skills.  Materials include question cards such as "what do you think will happen next?"  "Why do you think the character made that choice?"

In addition to helping your student improve their reading skills, your positive influence can have benefits that will last a lifetime.  The kids need the extra help and their teachers appreciate the extra support you can provide!

Schools require all volunteers have an approved background check on file to work with students.  The Great Rivers United Way Community Engagement Coordinator will contact you to explain more about the program and initiate the required background check.

So sign up today and help a child learn to love reading in your community!
