Hamilton Elementary: Join a crew of 10–15 volunteers as we support our amazing educators behind the scenes! We’ll be tackling fun, hands-on projects like cutting, laminating, sprucing up classrooms, organizing learning and play areas, and more. It’s a great way to give back, build community, and make a big difference at Hamilton & SOTA!

10 volunteers will burn help burn brush piles on Birch Point Prairie in Hixon Forest.

This can only be done when there is snow on the ground but not too much, and when it’s not too windy for safety or too cold for the volunteers. We hope for good conditions. 

Volunteers should wear old clothes of natural fibers. Embers can melt holes in nylon.  Also, wear footwear with good traction in snow. 

Transportation provided. 

Led by the Viterbo Sustainability Club, join as we further progress on the Plastic Bag Upcycle Project.  

Karen and Viterbo students will guide participants as we work to:

1) Cut plastic bags into strips

2) Crochet & weave strips together into mats

Wear school gear if you have any.  The group will walk up to Reinhart 134 after projects are dismissed from the FSPA Lobby.

First Teen Clothes Closet: Join a group of 6 as we assist a local non-profit with sorting donations, deep cleaning, and organizing supplies. This agency operates out of a local church on La Crosse’s north side and is a great community resource for many!

Children’s Museum:  It's always a great day when you get to play!  A group of 10 can help us disinfect and clean exhibits.  We can't wait to host you and appreciate you coming to volunteer with us.

Join this group of 6 people as we visit one of Viterbo's closest partners.  

Just a couple blocks from campus, the Place of Grace provides fellowship, meals, resources, and support for anyone in need.  We'll be helping deep clean the house, prepare food/meals, organize the food pantry, and anything else needed.  Founded by Tom Thibodeau, the Place of Grace is a staple with our Franciscan values, rooted in Servant Leadership.

Please wear Viterbo gear, dress in warm layers as we may have a short walk to 919 Hood St. depending on the weather.

Join a group of 6 people as we assist the Coulee Region Humane Society with their Doggy Day out program.  We'll help give adoptable dogs a break from the shelter, carefully listening to staff instructions for safety and dog development.  We also may do deep cleaning and organizing of donations/supplies as available.   

Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting stained or dirty and dress in layers - we'll be traveling between indoor and outdoor conditions to engage animals safely.

Join a group of about 10-20  folks as we go to the Catholic Charities Warming Center downtown La Crosse.  While all the guests will be gone, we will be able to help in a variety of ways! We will focus on deep cleaning the facility; including common spaces, sleeping areas, bathrooms, and office spaces.

This group of about 8 people will be working down at the Rotary Lights warehouse, cleaning and rolling extension cords. 

Transportation will be provided.

Help preserve history!

This group will be collaborating on a virtual project with staff from the Todd Wehr Memorial Library here on campus. The Library of Congress has digitized thousands of historical documents and has asked the public to help transcribe these images to better preserve their impact on our country’s history by making them searchable and more accessible.

For a more thorough description of the project and to prepare for working on it, please review the By the People Transcription Project guide at https://libguides.viterbo.edu/ByThePeople. We encourage anyone who signs up for this project to review the content on the guide, particularly the resources for transcribing and reading old handwriting, ahead of time to help us make a larger impact during our time together. This work makes historic information more discoverable, legible and accessible for future generations.

Examples of collections we’ll be able to transcribe at https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns-topics/ include: The Correspondence of James A. Garfield, Clara Barton: “Angel of the Battlefield,” Silent Film Music Cue Sheets, Walt Whitman, Rough Rider to Bull Moose: Letters to Theodore Roosevelt, Herencia: Centuries of Spanish Legal Documents, and Sheet Music of the Musical Theater.

In person participation is capped at 20 people using the room’s desktop computers, plus 8 additional people can bring in their own laptop to participate.

The Knit-a-Thon returns for its 9th MLK Jr. Day of making a difference. Since 2018, under the leadership of Kristen Nyholm, volunteers have knitted and stitched 5" x 5" squares into blankets made with care by members of the Viterbo community. These blankets are now donated to Mayo Hospital for patients and children through the Child Life Program.

No sewing or knitting experience is needed. Kristen and returning participants will guide newcomers. The group will meet in the Fine Arts Center Hospitality Suite. A Service Saturdays team member will email confirmation and details by Sunday, January 18.
